MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A tragic shooting at a beloved community climbing facility in the Soulsville neighborhood has left two men dead, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) confirmed Sunday evening.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire at Memphis Rox Climbing and Community at 4:13 p.m. When they arrived on scene, they discovered one man had died from gunshot wounds. A second victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
MPD stated that the shooting began as an argument between individuals at the facility, which quickly escalated into violence. One of the deceased victims was an employee of Memphis Rox, according to police.
Authorities have detained one individual in connection with the incident. Their role in the shooting has not yet been fully disclosed, and no charges had been announced as of Sunday night. Investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events and the relationship between those involved.
Memphis Rox is known not only as a rock climbing gym but also as a community anchor, providing inclusive programs and resources for youth and families, regardless of income. The violence at such a well-regarded community space has sent shockwaves throughout the neighborhood.
“This facility represents hope and healing for so many,” said one community member at the scene. “It’s heartbreaking to see it touched by this kind of tragedy.”
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
