A tense and rapidly unfolding hostage situation at Mercantile Bank, located in the 5400 block of State Street, came to a dramatic end earlier today. The gunman is confirmed dead, and a female hostage has escaped unharmed, authorities reported.
The incident prompted a massive, multi-agency emergency response. FBI agents, including their Emergency Support Team and hostage negotiators, were joined at the scene by units from the Michigan State Police, Saginaw Township Police, Bridgeport Township Police, Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department, Midland Police Department and SWAT, Saginaw City Police, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Saginaw Fire Department, and Mobile Medical Response (MMR).
Police confirmed that State Street remains shut down between Mitchell Street and Berberovich Drive as investigators continue to secure the scene and collect evidence.
While many details remain under investigation, sources have confirmed that the standoff ended with the suspect fatally shot—though it is not yet clear whether the gunman took his own life or was killed by law enforcement. The female hostage, reportedly held inside the bank during the ordeal, managed to escape safely.
Witnesses nearby reported hearing multiple sirens, seeing law enforcement armed with rifles, and observing armored vehicles and tactical units converge on the scene. Negotiators worked for hours to resolve the situation peacefully before it reached a fatal conclusion.
No additional injuries have been reported.
This remains an active investigation, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available. Residents are urged to avoid the area until police reopen the road and clear the scene.
Stay tuned for continuing coverage and official statements from law enforcement as they become available.
