At approximately 5:58 a.m. on June 22, New Jersey State Police responded to a fiery accident near milepost 45.8 on the northbound side of I‑295. According to a preliminary investigation, Officer Long lost control of his 2008 Honda SUV, departing the roadway and colliding with a traffic sign and tree. The vehicle subsequently caught fire. Emergency crews pronounced Long dead at the scene.
