Sammy Lopez, 52, of Waterbury, Connecticut, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2025, following a sudden heart attack. A lifelong resident of Waterbury, Sammy was a devoted husband, father, entrepreneur, and pillar of his community, whose warm smile and generous spirit touched the lives of all who knew him.
Born on March 15, 1973, to Maria and José Lopez, Sammy grew up in the North End neighborhood, where he developed a passion for helping others. After graduating from Crosby High School in 1991, he earned a degree in Business Administration from Western Connecticut State University.
In 1998, Sammy opened “Lopez Landscaping & Design,” transforming countless yards and public spaces across the region. His commitment to excellence and genuine care for his clients earned him both respect and friendship.Beyond his professional achievements, Sammy was a tireless volunteer.
He served as a board member of the Waterbury Neighborhood Revitalization Committee, coached youth soccer at the Lower City Youth Center, and organized annual food drives that supported local families in need. His ability to bring people together—whether organizing a community clean-up or hosting backyard barbeques—created bonds that will endure as his legacy.
Sammy married his high school sweetheart, Elena Martinez, in 1995. Together they raised three children—Gabriela, 22; Daniel, 19; and Sofia, 16—instilling in them the values of kindness, integrity, and resilience. Family was everything to Sammy; Sundays were sacred, reserved for family dinners, walks in the park, and storytelling that bridged generations.
He is survived by his wife, Elena; his children; his parents, Maria and José; his sister, Ana; and countless friends who were honored to count him as a confidant and companion. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 3, at Santos Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at St. John’s Basilica.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Waterbury Food Bank, reflecting Sammy’s lifelong dedication to feeding and uplifting his community.Though Sammy’s sudden passing leaves a profound void, those who loved him find comfort in the many lives he enriched.
