With heavy hearts, family, friends, and the Urbandale and Davenport communities mourn the sudden and heartbreaking passing of Chad Burton, who died on June 29, 2025, at the age of 44. A former manager at Guru BBQ in Des Moines, Iowa, Chad was a beloved father, friend, and community member whose vibrant spirit and deep kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Born on December 6, 1980, Chad grew up in Urbandale, Iowa, where his warm personality and natural charisma stood out even from a young age. He graduated from Davenport West High School in the Class of 1999 and went on to study Political Science at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), graduating with the Class of 2005. His educational journey reflected his deep curiosity about the world, a strong sense of civic responsibility, and a passion for connecting with others through conversation and action
Chad’s professional life took him in many directions, but it was during his time as a manager at Guru BBQ from December 2015 to December 2016 in Des Moines that many came to know and appreciate his leadership, integrity, and work ethic. Whether managing day-to-day operations or engaging with customers, Chad brought a contagious energy to the workplace. His laughter often echoed through the restaurant, and he had a special gift for making everyone—from staff to guests—feel welcome and valued.
But Chad’s proudest and most cherished role was that of a father. He was the loving dad to Andrew and Lainey, who were the center of his universe. Friends and family say that Chad lit up most when he spoke about his children. He was devoted, present, and deeply loving, never missing an opportunity to show them support, affection, and joy. His passing leaves an unfillable void in their lives, but his love will continue to guide them in the years ahead.
A dear friend shared the news of Chad’s passing with moving words:
“Andrew and Lainey lost their father today. I lost a dear friend. And the world lost a man with a spark so bright it could light up any room.
We all carry our own perfect memories of Chad—moments of joy, laughter, and love that we’ll hold close to our hearts forever. His kindness, his laughter, and his unwavering love touched so many lives. His spirit will never be forgotten.”
Those who knew Chad will always remember him for his quick wit, his deep empathy, and his ability to bring light into even the darkest of situations. He was someone who made people feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether he was reminiscing with old friends from Urbandale, building connections in Des Moines, or simply spending quiet time with his children, Chad lived his life with authenticity and heart.
In 2016, Chad moved from Des Moines back to Davenport, Iowa, where he continued to be a present force in the lives of those who loved him. His hometown of Urbandale, and the wider community that knew him, will forever hold his memory close.
As family and friends come together to grieve this immense loss, they do so with gratitude for the time they had with Chad. Services will be announced at a later date, and those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to share stories, photos, and tributes that capture the warmth, humor, and compassion that defined his life.
