MILWAUKEE, WI — The city of Milwaukee and the wider football community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nate White, a talented young athlete and former University of Wisconsin Badgers running back, who passed away at just 21 years old.
Nate was a proud Milwaukee native and a graduate of Rufus King High School, where he made a name for himself as a dynamic and explosive running back. A member of the Class of 2023, he earned a three-star recruit ranking and committed to the University of Wisconsin, fulfilling a dream shared by many in his hometown.
Though his time on the field in Madison was limited, Nate’s impact within the program went far beyond game day. Known for his quiet work ethic, deep humility, and unwavering dedication to his team, Nate was respected and loved by coaches, teammates, and staff alike. He transitioned to wide receiver in his second year with the Badgers and continued to pursue his goals with determination and grace.
In December 2024, Nate announced his transfer to South Dakota State University, seeking new opportunities both athletically and academically. He had only just begun the next chapter of his journey when news of his passing was confirmed by school officials in Brookings, South Dakota.
“Nate was a friend, a teammate, and a young man with so much promise,” Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell shared in a statement. “His passing is a devastating loss for all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. We stand with Nate’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Those closest to Nate remember a young man with a kind heart, a steady spirit, and a deep love for the game of football. Off the field, he was a loyal friend, a proud son, and someone who carried the pride of Milwaukee with him everywhere he went.
As the community grieves, tributes have poured in from across the state and beyond — a testament to the countless lives Nate touched with his quiet strength and undeniable presence.
Funeral arrangements will be shared by the family in the coming days. In this time of sorrow, the White family asks for continued prayers and privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
Rest in peace, Nate. You will forever be remembered, not only for your talent, but for the heart, humility, and light you brought into this world.
