Tracy City, Tennessee – Mr. James Andrew DeLozier, age 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A man known for his quiet strength, deep convictions, and steadfast devotion to those he loved, James leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him.
James was born on March 10, 1949, in Lebanon, Tennessee, to the late Robert Edward DeLozier and Julia Voline Wright DeLozier. Raised in a close-knit family, James was one of eight siblings and learned the value of hard work, humility, and compassion from an early age. These values would guide him throughout his life.
A proud veteran, James served honorably in the United States Air Force for six years, where he specialized in cryptographic maintenance. His technical expertise contributed to vital national security efforts during a time of global tension.
James brought the same meticulous attention to detail and sense of duty to every endeavor throughout his life. After completing his military service, he began a long and impactful career in education.
For 34 years, James taught drafting and computer building at Grundy County High School, where he became a beloved educator and mentor to generations of students.
He was known not only for his technical knowledge but for his patience, integrity, and genuine care for his students. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, helping to shape young minds and encourage future careers in engineering, technology, and design.
James was also deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Melba Adams DeLozier. The couple recently celebrated their golden anniversary, a remarkable milestone that stood as a testament to their enduring love, commitment, and partnership.
Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and faith. James and Melba’s only daughter, Amy DeLozier Opatich, and her husband Eric, were the joy of his life, as were his three granddaughters—Cameron, Alyse, and Olivia—who affectionately knew him as “Papa.” He took great pride in their accomplishments and cherished every moment spent with them.
James also shared a special bond with his mother-in-law, Ruth Adams, who remained a loving and steady presence in his life. His family extended beyond his immediate household, as he is also survived by three sisters, Helen Brethauer, Maudine West, and Marilyn Crutcher; and two brothers, David (Shirley) DeLozier and Philip (Lee) DeLozier. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Robert, Noel, and Paul DeLozier.
A man of strong faith, James was a faithful member of Providence Community Church. His quiet devotion and participation in church life reflected his commitment to living a life of purpose and grace. Whether through his service, his teaching, or his daily acts of kindness, James left a lasting mark on his community and those fortunate enough to know him.
James Andrew DeLozier will be remembered not only for his accomplishments and service but for the way he lived—with humility, dedication, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed, and his memory will continue to be a source of strength and inspiration.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday at Bonny Oaks Cemetery with Minister Roy Hopkins officiating. In accordance with the family’s wishes, there will be no visitation at the funeral home.
