Greer, SC – The community of Greer and the extended GMC (Greer Memorial Christian) High School family are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jack Pfister, a standout basketball player and recent graduate, who passed away unexpectedly.
Jack was just 19 years old. Jack was more than an athlete—he was a bright, funny, charismatic young man who brought energy and heart to every room he entered.
A 2024 graduate of GMC, Jack was known for his towering presence on the basketball court, where he earned respect not only for his skill, but for his grit, leadership, and unwavering team spirit. Off the court, he was known for his sense of humor, easygoing nature, and the kind of magnetic personality that made everyone feel like they belonged.
A cause of death has not been publicly released, but the loss has already rippled through the Greer community, with former teammates, classmates, teachers, and coaches expressing their grief and sharing stories of Jack’s impact.
“Jack was such a cool dude, man,” one former reporter wrote in tribute. “One of my favorite interviews. Full of great quotes and one-liners. And boy, did he provide some AMAZING stories.”
Indeed, Jack had a way with words and an effortless charm that made him unforgettable to everyone he met. Whether in front of the camera or chatting in the locker room, Jack’s personality shone as brightly as his talent.
Coaches recall his natural leadership, his constant encouragement of teammates, and his unselfish play style. Friends remember his jokes, his loyalty, and the way he lifted others up.
He played the role of the “old-school big man” in an era of fast-paced, guard-heavy basketball, and he dominated with a throwback style—grabbing rebounds with tenacity, setting solid screens, and scoring in the paint. Many who watched him say he was the best high school rebounder they’ve ever seen.
He played with heart, and it showed—especially in what has now become legend at GMC: the “flu game.” Despite being ill, Jack took the court in a critical game that would decide GMC’s shot at the region title.
He pushed through exhaustion and discomfort to lead his team to victory—securing the school’s first-ever regional championship. It was a defining moment not just for Jack, but for the entire program. His performance that day captured who he truly was: tough, unselfish, and relentlessly driven.
Beyond basketball, Jack was just beginning the next chapter of his life. He had plans and dreams, many of which centered around giving back, staying close to sports, and continuing to make people laugh. His future was bright, and his potential was limitless.
Jack is survived by his loving parents, siblings, extended family, and a circle of friends and former teammates who will forever carry his memory. While his time on Earth was tragically short, the impact he made was immeasurable.
He left behind not just stats and highlights, but stories—of loyalty, leadership, and love. The GMC community will remember Jack not just for his athletic feats, but for the joy and inspiration he brought to everyone who knew him.
Plans for a memorial service and celebration of life are currently underway, and the school has announced that his jersey will be retired in an upcoming ceremony—a permanent tribute to a young man who gave his all.
Rest in peace, Jack Pfister. Thank you for the memories, the passion, and the legacy. You will never be forgotten.
