LOS ANGELES, CA — A tragic act of domestic violence unfolded outside a California restaurant, where Gloria Zamora, a well-known fitness coach and mother of seven, was fatally shot alongside her date, 43-year-old Hector Garduno, in what authorities say was a targeted ambush by her estranged husband.
The deadly incident occurred in the parking lot of a sushi restaurant, where Zamora and Garduno had gone for a night out. According to investigators, Thomas Lizarraga, Zamora’s estranged husband, discovered the couple’s whereabouts and confronted them outside the establishment. Moments later, shots rang out, leaving both Zamora and Garduno dead at the scene.
Law enforcement officials say an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, who happened to be nearby, heard the gunfire and immediately responded. The deputy confronted Lizarraga, who was still armed, and fatally shot him, preventing further potential harm.
The tragic shooting came just days after Zamora appeared on a podcast, opening up about the emotional toll of her ongoing divorce. Friends say she had recently started trying to rebuild her life after a difficult separation and was beginning to find peace again.
“Gloria was a beacon of strength, a devoted mother, and an inspiration to many through her work in fitness and wellness,” one friend said. “She didn’t deserve this.”
Zamora leaves behind seven children, while Garduno, who was described as a devoted father, is survived by his four daughters.
Police are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the shooting, but early findings indicate it was a premeditated act of domestic violence.
The case has sparked renewed conversations about gun violence, domestic abuse, and the need for early intervention and support for those navigating difficult separations.
Support services and community fundraising efforts are underway to help the surviving children and families affected by the tragedy.
