A devastating multi-vehicle collision early Monday morning on the southbound 405 Freeway in Brentwood left one person dead and sent two others to the hospital—including a law enforcement officer found unresponsive at the scene.

The crash occurred around 2:00 a.m. near Moraga Drive, just north of Sunset Boulevard, prompting a full closure of the freeway’s southbound lanes that lasted several hours.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident involved at least two vehicles—a severely damaged pickup truck and a sedan with deployed airbags—visible in footage from the scene. Emergency responders quickly arrived to find multiple victims requiring immediate medical attention.

One individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of family.

Two others were rushed to nearby hospitals in unknown condition. Among them was a law enforcement officer, whose department affiliation has not yet been confirmed. According to CHP’s traffic incident log, the officer was found unresponsive at the crash site.

Dramatic video footage showed paramedics performing life-saving measures as a person believed to be the injured officer was wheeled into a waiting ambulance. A helicopter was also seen landing on the freeway, possibly to assist with transporting a patient to a trauma center.

Authorities have not released details about the events leading up to the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing. The southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway remained closed as of 4:30 a.m., causing significant traffic disruption during the early morning commute.

CHP and local law enforcement agencies are continuing to gather evidence and are urging any witnesses to come forward.
