Wayne, Michigan — June 22, 2025 Authorities have identified the suspect involved in the attempted mass shooting at CrossPointe Community Church as 31-year-old Brian Browning of Romulus, Michigan.
The terrifying incident unfolded Sunday morning during church services when Browning—dressed in tactical military gear and armed with multiple weapons—approached the church grounds. According to investigators, the suspect had previously posted a cryptic photo of himself outside the same church on social media weeks earlier, suggesting the attack may have been premeditated.
Witnesses say a vigilant churchgoer spotted Browning outside the church, heavily armed and moving toward the building. Acting quickly and without hesitation, the church member jumped into his vehicle and struck the suspect with his truck, disabling him before he could reach the doors.
Moments later, a security guard from inside the church rushed to the scene and engaged the suspect. In the exchange, the security guard was shot in the leg but managed to return fire, fatally shooting Browning before he could carry out further violence.
The security guard was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. Miraculously, no other church members were harmed.
Law enforcement officials say Browning acted alone, and there is no ongoing threat to the community. Investigators are now examining the suspect’s social media activity, background, and digital footprints to better understand his motive and mental state.
Police are praising the swift and heroic actions of both the churchgoer and the security guard, saying their bravery likely prevented a mass tragedy. The church has since released a statement thanking first responders and asking the community for continued prayers as they process the traumatic event.
