June 24, 2025 A tragic multi-vehicle collision on the southbound 405 Freeway early Monday morning has claimed the lives of a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant and a second motorist, leaving a third person injured and causing major traffic disruptions through the Brentwood area.

The fatal crash occurred around 2:00 a.m. near Moraga Drive, just north of Sunset Boulevard, and brought a swift and heavy emergency response to the scene. According to the California Highway Patrol and LAPD, the crash involved at least three vehicles: a pickup truck, a civilian sedan, and an LAPD patrol vehicle.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Video from the scene showed the severe aftermath—mangled wreckage scattered across the freeway, airbags deployed, and the LAPD cruiser badly damaged. A law enforcement officer was found down and unresponsive in the patrol car and was later confirmed to be deceased. The second fatality was an occupant of one of the civilian vehicles. Their identities have not yet been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin.

A third individual involved in the crash was transported to a local hospital with injuries; their condition remains unknown at this time.

The crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway in the Getty Center area for several hours during the morning commute as investigators worked to determine the cause of the collision. Traffic was heavily impacted, with commuters diverted through Brentwood and adjacent surface streets.

The LAPD issued a brief statement acknowledging the loss of one of their own and asking for privacy and respect for the officer’s family during this time of grief. Further details regarding the officer’s identity and years of service are expected to be released after formal family notification.

As investigators from the California Highway Patrol and LAPD’s own Traffic Division examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, the city of Los Angeles is reeling from yet another sobering reminder of the dangers faced by officers and everyday motorists alike on the region’s roadways.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families of the fallen officer and the second victim.
